Morocco has recalled its ambassador from Nigeria, accusing the authorities there of using King Mohammed VI in an election campaign.

Mr Jonathan, a Christian from southern Nigeria, is facing a strong challenge in the 28 March elections from opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari, who is popular in Nigeria's mainly Muslim north.

Earlier this week, Russian media reported of a possible use of torture against the suspects in the Nemtsov case. Dadayev's attorney refuted the claims on Thursday following which the Council for human rights asked the Investigative Committee and the prosecutor general to look into allegations of the use of torture against the detained.

As a consequence Morocco's Abuja ambassador was being recalled immediately for consultations, it said.

The Nigerian ministry of foreign affairs released a statement on Sunday, denying reports that President Jonathan had been snubbed by King Mohammed because he was trying to curry favour with Muslim voters.

Nemtsov, who served as Russia's deputy prime minister in late 1990's and later became one of the leaders of the country's opposition, was fatally shot on February 27. Five suspects in the case have been arrested: Ramzan Bakhayev, Tamerlan Eskerkhanov, Shagit and Anzor Gubashev and Zaur Dadayev.

Russian Presidential Adviser Mikhail Fedotov plans to visit the suspects in the Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov murder case.

Its foreign ministry issued a statement, denying the king had spoken by phone to Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan, as had been stated by Nigeria.


However, Morocco's foreign ministry responded by saying it wanted to state in the "clearest and strongest terms" that "there has never been a phone conversation" between the two men.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian Presidential Adviser and Chairman of the Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights Mikhail Fedotov plans to visit the suspects in the Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov murder case on Friday.

The North Africa kingdom denounced such "unethical practices", it said.




"The king has actually declined the request of the Nigerian government because it is part of the internal electioneering," Morocco's official news agency Map quoted the statement as saying.

Dadayev, who, according to a spokesman for the Security Council of Russia's Republic of Ingushetia, had served as deputy commander of a unit of the Chechen Republic Ministry of Internal Affairs's "Sever" battalion, was the only one to plead guilty. However on Wednesday, Dadayev withdrew his plea after the Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights suggested his confession was made under duress.

Nigeria has denied that the king was being used to win over Muslim voters.
